Earlier today I watched Maleficent with my little sister . One scene in particular caught my eye ( the one in the photo above ) It was a very emotional scene and i suspected it held a deeper meaning . I went straight to google to find out what it meant and I was right. What I found was so overwhelming i had to share my results with you :
The core of Maleficent is ‘abuse, and how the abused then have a choice of abusing others or overcoming and remaining loving, open people’.
“’We were conscious that it was a metaphor for rape’ Angelina Jolie explained how the scene in which her character has her wings ripped off her body after being drugged by her childhood friend and the man she’s in love with, had to be something ‘so violent and aggressive’ that it would make her ‘lose all senses of her maternity, her womanhood and her softness’. when a man violates a woman, he cuts off her wings. ”
The movie holds a strong message, where Disney is having a change of heart and no longer representing women as the classical ‘damsel in distress’ but presents strong female leading characters, messages like sisterhood and women sticking together and helping each other out to overcome obstacles.
For the sake of future generations i hope this way of thinking continues to grow. We need girls to know they don’t need to wait for someone to save them, that they’re capable of saving themselves and others just as much.
